Fabrics and textiles.

A little tip when laying out your pattern pieces on the fabric.

Sewing and creating with fabric is a creative and fun hobby, but there are certain technical aspects that can make a big difference to the end result. One of these important aspects is laying out the pattern pieces correctly on the fabric. It's easy to think that it's okay to lay the pattern against the folded edge of the fabric, but that's not always the best choice.

In the "old days" the fabrics were always doubled with the right side inward, precisely to protect the fabric and minimize color shift, but this is rarely done these days, so even if it's not visible now, the crease can appear after washing.

We recommend that you always fold the fabric, i.e. side towards the middle, to avoid future unpleasant surprises. When the fabric is folded, the fibers can break and it becomes difficult to iron out the creases. In addition, it is easy for a color shift to occur in the fold. To avoid these problems, it is therefore best to avoid placing the pattern pieces against the folded edge of the fabric. If this cannot be avoided because the pattern pieces are large, please think carefully and place the pattern pieces so that any creases/color shifts will be least visible.

You want to see the fabric's fine pattern when you are in the store and choosing and "patting" the fabrics, but unfortunately it is also more important not to place against the folded edge of the fabric.
